Our History

J Weir & Co was founded in 1882 by James Weir, who first set up business in  Edinburgh Street, Ponsonby.

In the 1940s the business moved to 70 Ponsonby Road and for the next 60 years continued to serve the people of Ponsonby and Grey Lynn. It was one of the four leading funeral companies in Auckland at the time.

In the 1970s John Moller, the owner, was a well known local identity.  An iconic photo of John and his cat outside the  funeral parlour appeared in a 1977 calendar. A photo of John also appears in the book “Urban Village” by Jenny Carlyon & Diana Marrow.

Weirs still has the hand written records dating back to 1882 when the first funeral was conducted. In 2006 the New Zealand Society of Genealogists kindly spent many hours sorting and indexing all the old records. These can be found on their website.

We are often asked to provide information about funerals conducted by the company and are happy to do so.
